First Duke University made a rule that classes could not begin before 8:30 a.m. Now, Duke students are getting even luckier, with the announcement that all freshman will be given free iPods. They’re living the high life in North Carolina.

Duke officials say the Apple iPods can be used for more than just listening to MP3 files, but also for educational purposes. Students will be able to download lessons, course content, and related files from a new web site that they can use on their brand new devices.

Oh, and Apple has ever-so-generously allowed the students to purchase music from that web site too. Smooth.

The Duke calendar and frosh orientation will already be loaded on their new iPods. (Note to self: transfer to Duke.)

So what kind of iPods are these? The old model with few gigabytes and ugly design? Not for these North Carolina students. The Duke froshies will get the latest model, packed with 20 GB, which retails for $300.

And if they happen to misplace their educational tools, Apple will be happy to sell them a new one.
