Who will play the title role in the upcoming Superman movie? Nobody knows that yet for sure. But the movie now has a director in Bryan Singer.

Singer, the director of The Usual Suspects and more recently X-Men, takes over for the man known as McG, who left the project this month because of creative differences with the studio bosses at Warner Bros.

Singer is a Superman historian, of sorts. “I feel that ‘Superman’ has been late in his return and it is time for him to fly again,” he said in a statement, noting that the series of movies helped shape his X-Men movies.

Tim Burton was originally going to direct the film in 1996, with Nicolas Cage tapped to play Superman, but the movie was canned before shooting began.

Jon Peters (Batman) has signed on to produce the film.

Plans are to shoot the movie in Australia with a $200 million budget. The script is not finalized, but it is expected that Singer will be involved in the writing process.
