When Apple launched its music store in May of 2003, they were entering unknown territory. As the world’s first legal online music downloading service, they sold millions in their first month and never looked back.
Boasting more than 700,000 songs, and stores in the US and Europe, iTunes holds more than 70 percent of the legal MP3 market.
Yesterday, Apple surpassed the 100,000,000 song download mark, with Zero 7′s Somersault being the lucky track. It was downloaded by Kevin Britten of Hays, Kansas.
Kevin won a 17-inch Powerbook, a 40GB iPod and 10,000 free MP3 downloads. Apple is also givingn away 50 20GB iPods to the purchasers of each 100,000th song downloaded between 95 and 100 million songs.
