When “Canadian Idol meets 8 Mile,” there’s no telling what to expect. That’s the way Jonathan Ramos, President of Canada’s leading urban concert promoter REMG, describes “Rip the Mic,” a freestyle battle going down in Toronto on July 17.

From June 21 to June 25, hopeful contestants can record their rhymes by calling 416-237-5430. 16 MCs will then be played on Flow 93.5, where listeners will vote for their 8 favourites.

Those 8 will battle live at the Phoenix on July 17 in a “Freestyle War.” They’ll be judged by Talib Kweli, Toronto rapper/producer Solitair, Universal A&R rep David “Click” Cox, and Jemeni from Flow. Kweli will also perform.

The winner will get $1000 cash, a phone plan and clothes. And if they’re good enough, maybe Universal’s Cox will make them into an even bigger star.
