The news broke late last week that the latest star of ABC’s The Bachelor, backup New York Giants quarterback Jesse Palmer, had broken up with his chosen one, the blonde law student, known as Jessica B., making the bachelors’ record a dismal zero weddings and five break-ups.

The latest couple’s demise should not be too shocking if you consider the fact that Palmer did not even propose to 22-year-old Jessica Bowlin on the show’s finale May 19. During the final rose ceremony, the 25-year-old Canadian-born athlete said that he was not ready to propose and the two needed more time to grow together. Instead, he offered her a one-way ticket to New York so the two could spend more time as a couple. Bowlin is from Huntington Beach, Calif.

The parting appeared to be mutual and affable as a written statement quoted Palmer as saying, “Jessica and I shared an incredible romantic journey on the show that began with a friendship that remains strong today,” but that their futures were in different directions.

Bowlin added that “with too much distance and too little time, these were not ideal circumstances in which to start a relationship. Jesse is a great guy and has a wonderful family. Who knows what the future holds?”

The former bachelors: Alex Michel, Aaron Buerge, Andrew Firestone and Bob Guiney, also broke up with the women with whom they chose to present the final rose.

The Bachelorette stars are doing much better with the first bachelorette, Trista Rehn, marrying her bachelor Ryan Sutter in a televised “reality” wedding complete with the ever-present host of the two shows, Chris Harrison, providing the play-by-play throughout the ceremony. The latest bachelorette, Meredith Phillips, remains engaged to Ian McKee.
