The Stepford Wives Begins the Big Summer Movie Hit Season
With all of the heavy dramatic films that Nicole Kidman has done in recent years, (The Hours, The Others, Cold Mountain, etc.) it’s about time for her to let her guard down and embrace the realm of dark comedy. She is therefore set to do so in her latest feature film, The Stepford Wives. Based on the Ira Levin’s novel by the same name, and a loose remake of the 1975 film, it is expected to resemble, however rejuvenate, its predecessor. Directed by Frank Oz, and including a strong list of seasonal veterans (Matthew Broderick, Christopher Walken, Bette Midler, etc.) The Stepford Wives is being proclaimed as potentially becoming an instant hit at the box office this summer.
In the town of Stepford, all the wives are all-too perfect, from their mannerisms to their personality to their overall appearance. Their sole purpose in life appears (to the untrained eye) to please their husbands. Oh if it were only that simple?
Kidman and Broderick star as husband and wife who become new residents of the upper-class suburban town. Kidman soon becomes suspicious of the strange, deranged, robotic way in which all the women behave.
Heralded as one of the best previews of the year at the Golden Trailer Awards, the films teaser was a big winner, earning the Best in Show and Most Original at the Summer 2004 Blockbuster awards. Truly The Stepford Wives already has some big shoes to fill with audiences anxiously anticipated its release June 11.
