CD Review: Petey Pablo – ‘Still Writing in My Diary: 2nd Entry’
Coming off the success of 2001’s breakout hit “Raise Up,” Petey Pablo doesn’t miss a beat with “Still Writing in My Diary: 2nd Entry.”
Pablo still has the unmistakable raspy and rough voice, but he has become a more eclectic performer on his second album. He has some fast rhymes on the straight-up rap track “Stick ‘em Up,” while he has a gospel-inspired song in “He Spoke to Me.”
Comparing those two songs in particular reveals something else about Pablo: his lyrics are sometimes motivating, and sometimes tasteless. “Put the money in the bag bitch before I blow your head off,” he raps on the controversially-titled “Stick ‘em Up.” Then on the gospel track, he rhymes about his faith in God and how he turned his life around.
Aside from the inappropriate lyrics, it is refreshing to hear a hip-hop album with so much variety. Most of the album focuses on his rhymes, but with collaborations from such artists as Missy Elliott, Bubba Sparxxx, Young Buck, and Lil’ Jon, there is an array of sounds that is bound to please most listeners.
