Will he kill himself or won’t he? That’s the question that is nearly impossible to ignore while watching 2 Days. It is also the question that friends and family of Paul Miller (Paul Rudd) ask themselves.
Paul, a struggling actor, decides to commit suicide in 48 hours and enlists the help of a film crew to document his final two days. Friends, though mostly acquaintances, try to stop him, refusing to leave until he promises not to kill himself. He gives in, but when they think he is safe, he reaffirms his position to commit suicide.
Throughout the dark comedy, Paul fails to give a sufficient answer as to why he is giving up on life. In his final days, he brings an audition room to tears at an incredible yet brief read-through, almost landing a part in a movie, yet still wants to die.
Meanwhile, a cast of zany characters works for free, creating the documentary. With them are two film students, documenting their documentary.
The film is shown through several viewpoints: the documentary camera, the documentary of the documentary camera, and the regular film camera.
Rudd (Friends, Clueless) portrays Paul Miller ironically as a happy person at peace with himself, without much care for what happens to him at this point in his life. He racks up a large credit card bill in his final days, because he learns once he dies, the bill will cease.
2 Days at times is slow. One minute the mystery over whether or not he kills himself is intriguing; the next minute it seems like it would be better off to fast forward until the end to see what happens, just to get the mystery over with already. But the mystery takes on a life of its own. 2 Days is stimulating. Rudd is tremendous. With more star power and a tighter script, this movie should have been in theatres instead of a direct-to-DVD release.
