Wednesday, March 3
Although the official launch of Canadian Music Week is tomorrow (March 4), I headed down to Sony’s showcase at Tonic. I was most interested in seeing what all the fuss around Graph Nobel was about. The Toronto-native is signed to Columbia and is working on her debut album. Her rock n’soul was well received by the industry-folks. She really got into her music, bouncing around on stage with her backup singer. However, her band looked disinterested and bored, but Nobel proved worthy of her acclaim. Should be interesting to see how she progresses as the release of her album nears.
I almost left after Nobel, but great thing I stayed. Closing the night was Kyprios. White Canadian rappers don’t have the best reputations, but I was amazed by Kyprios. Also performing in front of a band (which included a trumpet and a huge base), Kyprios showed huge potential. His eyes glared out at the crowd, almost popping out of his head, as he passionately rapped about everything from racism to the faults of the industry. He is perhaps the highlight of CMW, and it hasn’t even officially begun.
Kyle Riabko was supposed to perform but he caught a virus earlier in the day.
