CD Review: 50 First Dates Soundtrack
The soundtrack for Adam Sandler’s new movie, “50 First Dates,” is exactly the way a soundtrack should be made. Instead of putting a bunch of hits by different artists together (that may or may not have actually been in the film) like most soundtracks do, this one features never-before heard tracks, which are covers of older songs. Many have a reggae-vibe to them.
Seal covers Echo and the Bunnymen’s “Lips Like Sugar.” That is one cover that one would expect to be a total disaster, yet it is one of the standout tracks. Seal sounds excited, yet still showcases his powerful voice.
“Your Love” by Wyclef Jean (featuring Eve) is another track that is superb. Jean knows exactly how to make a song fit into any context.
And the best track on the whole album: Wayne Wonder’s “Hold Me Now.” Who knew this reggae-singer could sing so well?
There are some sleepers that should have been left it bed. UB40?s rendition of “Every Breath You Take” is boring. “True” by the Black Eyed Peas? Will.I.Am & Fergie is almost the same as the original, except worse.
What Adam Sandler movie would be complete without a song by the comedian himself? “Forgetful Lucy,” which he sings to Drew Barrymore’s character, is genius. It’s tamer than most of his material, but that is expected for this family movie.
