Review: ZipCord Stereo Headphones

Posted by Daniel Levine on January 18th, 2004

In the last year, I have had the opportunity to try out many innovative types of headphones ranging from in-ear isolation headphones to wireless headphones. A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to test yet another type of headphone. This time I looked at and tested a pair of CMOAmerica ZipCord headphones. CMOAmerica is one of the only North American distributors of retractable electronics. They sell everything from headphones to Ethernet cables to mice: all of them taking advantage of their retractable technology.

The retractable headphones are a great concept and work very easily. Simple to use, you pull on both sides of the cord to your desired cord length and just like any other normal headphone, you plug them into your headphone jack and put the two ear buds in your ears. When you are done with the headphones, you gently tug on both ends of the wire and the headphones retract into a length of no more than about 3 to 4 inches.

The thing that really separates these headphones from most others is how convenient they are. When I listen to my iPod, I am constantly turning the music on and off, whether it is to talk to someone or for any other reason. I find that it is very inconvenient to have to fold up the long wire and put it in your pocket when you know you will probably take them right out of your pocket two minutes later to start listening again. That?s where these headphones come into play. Need to take your ear buds out for a second? Easy, just tug the wire and SNAP! They are retracted more easily than you could imagine. Did the wires get tangled? Just keep on pulling the headphones until they come back out again and you’re fine. These headphones make situations like that a breeze.

Another great thing about these headphones is the price/quality ratio. These fabulous headphones only cost USD$19.99 and sound great. They?re priced low enough so that you can buy them even if you do not plan to use them as your primary headphones.

The only real bad thing about these headphones is that the cord is a little short. I tested these headphones with the Apple Computer?s iPod that comes with a remote. With the extra cord length of the remote, these headphones were just right.

Pros:

- Extremely convenient
- Quality Sound
- Great Price
- No Loose Wires To Deal With

Cons:

- Short Cord
- Not ideal for any sports or running since the middle part of the headphone is somewhat heavy and sways when you run
- Would like them to be a little more durable

Final Thought: 4/5

These headphones really are convenient and are a good idea to get if you?re the type or person who is constantly listening to music, but at the same time constantly having to take out the ear buds. If you need the room or just don?t like having tangled wires then these headphones are with out a doubt a great product for you.
