DVD Review: U2 Go Home
If you missed seeing U2 on their Elevation tour, don’t miss out on their DVD release, “U2 Go Home: Live from Slane Castle, Ireland.” The complete concert from September 1, 2001, when they returned to play in front of their home crowd, is seen in this package.
During their tour, U2 began each concert with all the lights on, creating the closest feeling to intimate that they could obtain, even in front of large audiences such as this 160,000-person crowd. The DVD continues with that intimate feeling. From the first song, Elevation, where U2 are shown walking to stage, and throughout the DVD with the audience-level cameras, you feel like you are witnessing the performance.
There’s no pointless “behind the scenes” footage. When used effectively, candid footage can be a great way to know more about the band, but too often on concert DVDs, artists see cameras and act like goofs, providing little entertainment value to their fans. If you’ve got good footage, use it. If not, scrap it. U2 must not have had anything worthwhile; therefore it was a wise choice.
U2 go one step further, and actually include the whole “Unforgettable Fire” documentary from 1984, which captured U2 recording their fourth album at Slane Castle. The documentary is re-mastered for the first time since it was available on VHS in 1985. Here, U2 can be candidly seen in their early years, something much more riveting than that normal DVD twaddle.
Also featured on the DVD are the “Mysterious Ways” bonus track, and 360-degree camera angles, screensavers, and a calendar, when viewed on computers.
