When releasing new music today, half the battle is online promotion. However, contests, signed merch and giveaways aren’t always the best solutions. When working on their latest album, Hedley came up with a brilliant idea, they decided to make trailers.

The last time Dr. Dre helped produce an album for an intrepid artist, 50 Cent developed into one of the year’s top-selling artists.
Now, it’s Knoc-turn’al’s turn. Long Beach, California rapper is scheduled to release “The Way I Am,” which he worked on with Dre, on February 24, 2004.
And Knoc has high hopes for his first full-length album. In fact, he’s considering this the “Chronic 3,” in reference to Dre’s two legendary Chronic albums.
“Like I say in one of my songs, Dr. Dre made two Chronics. This is the third one,” Knoc tells andPOP, on the line from Los Angeles. “Even Dr. Dre said, ‘man that’s some Chronic right there’.”
Others featured on the album include Nate Dogg, Warren G, Timbaland, DJ Quik, and Snoop Dogg, who appears on the title-track.
“Snoop solidifies for me the last legend that I needed to work with as far as the roller coaster is concerned. That was the last piece to the puzzle.”
The puzzle had at least 900 pieces. That’s how many songs he wrote in the two years he worked on this album. He settled with 14 songs that he considered “timeless.”
But he was originally hoping to release his debut in April 2002. That album was leaked to the internet and had to be delayed. Instead, he released “LA Confidential Presents Knoc-Turn’Al,” a six-song EP that sold 250,000 copies. If “The Way I Am” is leaked early, he knows who to blame.
“If it gets bootlegged this time, I know that it comes from Elektra (his record label) because I don?t even have a copy of this album.”
Unlike 50 Cent, Knoc is not using his criminal past as a commodity. He’s been through years of trouble including fulfilling a prison sentence of four years. He’s so tired of his old ways that he doesn’t even go to funerals anymore (“The way I last saw you is the way I want to remember you.”).
“If I don?t separate myself from the life that I used to live and this life, then I’m not going to go where I want to go. Where I want to go is I want to be a respected individual in this industry. I don’t want to be looked upon negatively. I don?t want people to fear me. I want people to actually know me and know what I’m about. I don?t need to be scared for people to know me. A man feared is a dead man because you’re targeted if you’re feared.”
Knoc also refuses to get himself involved in feuds with other artists, which again is opposite of the strategy 50 Cent took to become a multi-platinum selling artist. He doesn’t want to be the one that police go to question first when a rival would get hurt.
“Who’s the first person they went to when Tupac got shot? It had nothing to do with Puffy but they called him telling him he’s under the investigation for the murder of Tupac. If something happened to Ja Rule, who you think is the first person they’re going to call is? 50 Cent.
“I’m not going to go around and tell the whole world that I don?t like you because something might happen and then I’ll end up in jail anyway because I already said I don?t like you.”
One such feud that could have been is with a rapper named Nocturnal (same name, different spelling). Knoc refers to him as “the one that’s mad cause he didn?t make a hit.”
Nocturnal recorded a track in 2002 that dissed Knoc. According to Knoc, the other rapper called him and wanted to organize a rivalry. “What I did say to him was, ‘what am I going to gain with beefing with you? You don?t even have a record deal. Stop it’.”
Knoc has more to show off than the ability to diss. “I can engineer, I can record my own vocals, I can sing, I can write, I produce. I can play instruments. I want to make music so people can understand that I separate myself from a lot of rappers by the fact that I know how to make music.” This includes the cello, French horn, and piano. He also made the beats for four songs on the album.
One song he created the beats for is “War,” a politically-driven song where he raps about peace. When the Dixie Chicks spoke out against the war, it almost ruined their career. Knoc does not fear the consequences that could come from this song.
“I don’t appreciate the fact that we’re going over there and tripping all over those people. I believe that Bush is living out his father’s vendetta. There’s people that don’t deserve to be bombed and don’t deserve to have their apartment doors kicked in. How long we going to be at war over terrorism? We can’t stop terrorism. That’s a war the can never stop.”
His eagerness to rap about the war stems from his attitude to speak about what he feels.
“If you can get people to really feel your opinion, that’s who sells the most records. 50 Cent killed Ja Rule’s career just by having a better opinion than Ja Rule– not because Ja Rule is a punk; just because 50 Cent’s opinion was stronger than Ja Rule’s. It’s like the Nas and Jay-Z beef. Nas won because his opinion was stronger.”
He doesn’t want to talk about his criminal past, he doesn’t want to start feuds, he raps about war: three things that historically would not lead to a successful album. But he is going to let his music speak louder than felonies and quarrels.
“Everybody is telling me I’m going to bring the West Coast back to popularity. I’m like the WC ain’t gone nowhere. I believe I can bring a new beginning into the West Coast.”
