Pasqua Combines Love for Music and Television

Posted by Adam Gonshor on November 18th, 2003

Dan Pasqua has interviewed high profile artists like Avril Lavigne, Ja Rule, and Sean Paul. So it comes as a surprise that the artist who has given him the most trouble is Joee, the Canadian dance artist.

“When I was doing the interview, I noticed on the CD cover that he had an accent ?gout on one of his E’s so it’s pronounced ‘Joe?’ (rhymes with “day”). In my extro, I said, ‘thanks very much Joe?’,” Pasqua tells andPOP, recounting the interview from about two years ago.

A confused Joee said the accent was for “artistic design.” Pasqua showed him that the misused accent was also on the E elsewhere on his album. Joee told Pasqua to do the extro again, but Pasqua told him that it’s not going to change. “He said, ‘then this interview is over’.”

A month later when Pasqua was at the MuchMusic Video Awards, Joee’s attitude changed completely. “When we got into the party, he was like my best friend.”

Pasqua, 21, has been interviewing musicians for almost five years. They have appeared on Rant, which airs on Rogers Television, for the show’s three years.

He started working at Shaw (which Rogers purchased) when he was 16 doing a summer co-op. Towards the end of the summer, he asked one of the on-air hosts if he could help her with her show. For some reason, she was taken back by his request and told him he’d never work in television ever again.

Now, it’s hard to flip by Rogers without seeing Pasqua. He worked on a teen magazine program called Shock, which evolved into a half-hour show all about music. When Shaw was bought, Rogers wanted more of a teen issues type of show, and Rant replaced Shock. Pasqua was able to keep a music segment on Rant.

The Richmond Hill resident also hosts the live Swap Shop in York Region (airing in York Region, north of Toronto), and has helped out on-air during charity auctions, the Santa Claus Parade and Rogers’ election coverage.

“I love the feeling of live television,” he says. “As structured as it is, you have more control. You have to be careful what you say. I can shoot off my mouth sometimes, which could be a problem for some people.”

His main focus however is on Rant. He does a lot more than conducting the interviews with musicians. Pasqua makes the calls, books the interviews, researches his guests, and after the interview works with the editor to put the story together.

Pasqua uses several techniques to get his guests comfortable. When he interviewed Lavigne last year, he was able to get her to open up and actually receive eye contact, as it is typical for Lavigne to hide behind her straight hair.

“At first she was quiet but then I started talking to her like she was a friend and I found her to be very genuine.”

A less conventional approach he often takes is swearing at the beginning of the interviews (“not to them, but at them”). He may have to spend more time editing, but he says it makes the artists more comfortable.

“It depends on the artist too. You don?t want to over do it. Like if you’re interviewing Swollen Members, they don?t want [the interview] to be too structured, so if you swear a little, they’ll start swearing too. They’ll feel like they’re talking to their friend, more than just doing a regular interview.”

To stay away from conducting a boring interview, Pasqua tries to find facts that will catch the artist off-guard. He usually goes straight to their fan pages rather than their official site.

“They provide a little bit more interesting information about the artists. And most of the time it’s legit because these fans really love the artists and they try to find the weirdest information and sometimes it’s fun to spring that information on the artists and they kind of get thrown off.”

Pasqua also acts on the side when finds time to audition. But no matter what Pasqua is doing on Rogers, he is not playing a role; what you see is the real Dan Pasqua.

“That’s me on TV. It’s no different from when I’m with my family, friends or anywhere. When the camera goes on, I’m just me.”

You also see his passion for pop culture. He’s somewhat of a pop culture junkie. In fact he is taking a pop culture course at the University of Toronto, where he is in his third year.

“I love everything about music and pop culture. There’s so much to analyze. Sometimes it could be overanalyzed. Some people will go a little too far with it when they should just take the music for what it is. But I guess it’s a vicious circle. In some sick way, I enjoy the vicious circle.”

He lists Weezer, Coldplay, Jurassic 5, Outkast and Queens of the Stone Age as some of his favourite acts. “I like music that makes you feel,” he says.

Pasqua hopes to use his time at Rogers “gaining as much experience as I can to eventually do more and something bigger.”

Finding a career that combines his love for music and television is his ultimate goal, whether it is directing music videos or being part of a music station.

“I think music is a huge aspect of life and it just seems natural that I choose a field of work where music is involved. Since I love television, the two just go together. If the evolution of my years in television is any indication, I’m looking forward to the opportunities that lie ahead.”

Catch Pasqua on Rant every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on Rogers (check your local listings for times) and co-hosting Swap Shop Saturdays live at 5 PM (only in York Region).
