The members of Fountains of Wayne had little to do with getting their music video played on MuchMusic and MTV.
Rachel Hunter’s exotic dancing and bikini-clad dip in the pool were the selling points. The supermodel stars in the “Stacy’s Mom” video, which has become an anthem for teenage boys’ fascinations with their friends’ good-looking mothers – or “MILFs” as they were called in “American Pie.”
The New York-based quartet was not required to be on set while Hunter was filming her parts, but the bandmates happily showed up anyway.
“We were there at 6 a.m. with our own video cameras,” said guitarist and songwriter Adam Schlesinger.
The video is directed by Chris Applebaum, who has also worked with Britney Spears and Mandy Moore. He got Hunter to appear in the video nearly-naked.
“We had a little wish list of people to star in it, and she was at the top of the list. He’s just a well-connected L.A. dude,” said the 35-year-old Schlesinger, who earned an Oscar nomination for writing the title track to the movie “That Thing You Do.”
Schlesinger and his childhood friend Chris Collingwood – who both agree they do not have hot moms – founded the band in 1996. They were named one of entertainment’s 100 most creative people by Entertainment Weekly in 2002.
The rest of “Welcome Interstate Managers,” their third album, also deals with unusual topics, such as drunken salesmen, bad waitresses, clip-on ties, and mowing the lawn. But one issue it stays away from is the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
Schlesinger and Collingwood were together when the planes hit the World Trade Center and watched from the streets as the Twin Towers collapsed. Schlesinger believes the music business is the same as it was before the attacks.
“I don’t think it’s changed at all. I kind of expected it might. I think people in America are kind of pretending that nothing happened or at least trying to. It’s just the same old schlock that everybody’s always been putting out.”
He does not take a different approach to writing lyrics, unlike other musicians who have dedicated complete albums to the tragic events, such as Bruce Springsteen.
“It’s not like we could suddenly try to turn ourselves into Springsteen. In fact I’m kind of disappointed that he even tried to write an album about September 11 because it doesn?t seem like something you want to write a record about. I couldn?t do it.”
Instead, they stuck with the quirky lyrics and a sound that is regarded as “power-pop.” While other bands that play their own instruments would have a problem being associated with the word “pop,” it is a classification Fountains of Wayne embraces.
“We’re not one of those bands that ever writes while jamming,” explained Schlesinger. “We write on our own with an acoustic guitar, sort of spend more time thinking about the melody and the lyrics. The band part of it is just a way to present the songs that we’ve written.”
