CD Review: Awesome Collective Vol. 1
We’ve been saying how Canadian hip-hop could take over the music world, but the argument gets stronger with every release. Case in point: “Awesome Collective Vol. 1.” This album features two or three tracks each from some of Canada’s rising urban artists.
Big Black Lincoln, led by Saukrates, produces two of the strongest songs, with the catchy “Pimpin’ Life” and dance-inspired “All of You.” This contingence is definitely an artist to keep an eye on as they move up the hip-hop ladder.
Bishop’s a little premature sounding like a superstar with lines like: “I got little kids begging me to get with their sisters/I got old ladies stopping me to pose for pictures/So ridiculous, the success got me bugging.” But by killing it on BET and releasing beguiling tracks like “That’s the Way,” those conceited-sounding rhymes will soon sound modest.
There’s also the new female singer, Jenna G., whose impressive voice outshines the other artists on the album, with hype “Gentleman.”
Also featured on the album are: Kuya, Reign, and Keiko.
