CD Review: Chingy
At the beginning of the summer, the name Chingy meant nothing. Now, the St. Louis rapper holds perhaps the song of the summer with the Trak Starz-produced “Right Thurr.”
His debut self-titled album is a collection of hyped-up hip-hop club music, performed with his bouncy and confident voice. His confidence makes him sound like he is a rap veteran, but he was a virtual unknown before he opened for Nelly in 2002 and joined the Disturbing Tha Peace family.
His songs deal predominantly with two things: partying and girls, and he does nothing to hide the fact that he’s a lady lover. “I like the way you look in them pants?,” he raps on the hit single.
On “Wurrs My Cash,” the party-beats that control most of the other songs is simmered down to focus on Chingy’s ability to carry a song with his raps. He rhymes back and forth between his dominant loud voice, and his poignant tripped-out tone.
Murphy Lee, Tity-Boi, I-20, Ludacris and Snoop Dogg make appearances on the album, with Jermaine Dupri and Trina lending their talents to the “Right Thurr” remix.
