CD Review: Sarai – The Original
The release of Sarai’s “The Original” could be the start of the next trend in music: white females rapping. If it is, Sarai is a decent enough artist to lead the way.
The first thing she might have to deal with is being called “the female Eminem,” or “Feminem.” She realizes this will happen, and even mentions Eminem in “Mind Ya Business,” rapping, “And Eminem yes I’m feeling him yo/ ‘Cause there’s a Stan fan everywhere you go.”
Her vocals on the album are smooth. She has the street-vibe in her voice, as in even though she looks like a pop singer, she doesn’t sound anything like it.
Almost reminiscent of Wyclef Jean’s “Perfect Gentleman” is “Ladies.” The topic is different, bit it has the same rap-dance feel to it that could fair well in the clubs.
A lot of Sarai’s music deals with topics not normally explored on rap albums. “It’s Not a Fairytale” is from the eyes of a teenager going through pregnancy. It’s not a personal account but a much different kind of song than some of the other upbeat material on the album. “Life” is a song about a cheating boyfriend who gets another girl pregnant.
Beau Dozier makes a guest appearance on “Swear,” an exchange between him, the “boyfriend,” and Sarai, the “girlfriend.” It’s a perfect addition to the album and really shows Sarai’s skills of playing a role in a song.
