Canadian Idol Shocker: Toya Is Out
Toya Alexis getting voted off Canadian Idol Tuesday night was like the East Coast power outage; it should not have happened. Alexis received the least amount of votes this week, the most shocking event to happen on Canadian Idol thus far.
As host Ben Mulroney announced her name, the sold-out crowd in Toronto, the judges, the other competitors, and probably the viewers at home, all had the same reaction: stunned silence.
After Monday night’s performance show, the only thing clear was that Alexis would have no trouble moving on to the next round. As Jake Gold, one of the judges, said on the show Tuesday, nothing the voters do can surprise him anymore. But there was no way he could have seen this coming.
Mulroney announced the bottom three: first Gary Beals, an understandable choice; then the shock of Alexis; and then Audrey de Montigny instead of Billy Klippert, who was one of, if not the, frontrunner to get voted off tonight. Klippert was surprised that he made it through and de Montigny was in the bottom three. In fact, he was about to stand up, but when he heard that he moved on to Idol’s final five, he couldn’t believe it.
But as big as a surprise that Klippert was not in the bottom three, nobody could have expected Alexis to get voted off.
Immediately, fans headed over to Idol’s online message board where they posted their disgust. Headlines include, “Canada disgusts me,” “That is so stupid,” and “Toya Out???” Some fans speculated that the phone lines got mixed up, while others foolishly blamed racism. Even people who disliked her were stunned.
In total, a record 1.9 million Canadians voted Monday night, most of them wrong.
