Canadians To Get Legal Music Downloading Service
Toronto based Moontaxi Media, who in late May announced plans for a Canadian system that allowed users to legally download music, now has the backing of the 5 major record labels.
BMG Canada, Sony Music, Universal, EMI and Warner have all agreed to supply music to the new system. Called PureTracks, users will be able to download music for as little as $0.99 Canadian, much cheaper than their US counterparts (if you factor in the exchange rate).
Users will also enjoy the vast selection of music from indie labels.
Moontaxi plans to model their new system after the very successful iTunes Music Store. However, this new system is said to be a Windows only service, with files in Windows Media format, leaving Canadian Mac users out of the loop.
Whether or not PureTracks will be as successful as iTunes has been, is yet to be determined. No one has been able to create the seamless integration that Apple has done with iTunes. Regardless, PureTracks does have one advantage, it’s the first service available outside the USA.
