Candida Clauseri, who impressed the judges and fans four weeks ago with a flawless rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You,” was one of the first three competitors to be to be eliminated from Canadian Idol, as revealed Tuesday night. Although Clauseri appeared to be one of the frontrunners in the competition, her performance Monday night of Celine Dion’s “Power of Love” was nowhere near perfect.
“My guess would be that she had great success with the Whitney Houston thing that was incredibly difficult to pull off, and perhaps she got into the attitude that that’s what it’s going to take for her to succeed,” Zack Werner, one of the judges, told andPOP after the show. “Great songs demand great vocal performances. She chose something that was going to demand an enormous vocal performance from herself.”
Richie Wilcox and Karen-Lee Batten were also eliminated Tuesday, bringing the total of remaining contestant down to eight. 1.6 million votes were tallied, a record amount in Canada.
Besides those three, Toya Alexis was also in the bottom four, clearly a shock to the 1000 people in attendance, which began Toya-related chants during commercials.
“People are voting largely based on star power,” Werner said. “I think Toya is a great singer but she doesn’t necessarily communicate that star vibe to enough people.”
The theme of next week’s show is Motown, featuring the legendary Temptations. The Motown catalogue that the contestants have to sing from is difficult, said Werner.
“The songs are known so well, to come up with your own individual interpretation of things is so tough. It’s a lot to try to deal with that catalogue.”
Next week’s show airs live on Monday at 8PM on CTV, and the results show, with an appearance by Mariah Carey, is the next day at 7:30PM.
