CD Review: In Essence – The Master Plan
The Canadian urban music scene just got a lot stronger with the debut release from In Essence, “The Master Plan.” It’s the best Canadian release so far this year from any artist, and further adds to the legitimacy of the rising Canadian urban scene.
The Toronto-based quintet offers a mix throughout the album of R&B, hip-hop, dance, and even rock on their latest single, “Friend of Mine,” which they call “aggressive R&B.” People are already familiar with their 2002 hit “IE,” and now they will be privileged to hear what else In Essence has to offer.
They start things off by showcasing their tremendous vocal ability with the acapella “Who Are We.” The group redid “You Will Never Find,” which was a hit in the States a few years ago thanks to their relationship with Funkmaster Flex at the time.
“Do Whatcha Like” is a sure club banger, and “Closer” shows how they are able to groove together in sync. In Essence shows their softer side with “Change.”
This album could and should help the struggling urban market in Canada, and also could find its way to the U.S. where it will surely be well received. In Essence’s “Master Plan” is just beginning and Canada is the first trip on their new journey.
