Her videos don’t always make too much sense, but Missy Elliott sure knows what to do to impress MTV. Elliott’s “Work It” music video earned the singer 8 MTV Video Music Award nominations including Best Video.

Justin Timberlake was right behind her with seven nominations, for his “Cry Me a River” and “Rock Your Body” videos.

Country legend Johnny Cash, not your typical VMA nominee, received six nominations for his cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt.”

Chris Rock hosts the show, which will be handed out August 28. Christina Aguilera and Coldplay will perform.
