In a surprising move, Rakim has split with Dr. Dre, who was producing his upcoming album, and Dre’s Aftermath Records. Just last week, Rakim told MTV that the album was progressing and Dre “can bring the best out of me.”

“He’s already shopping a new deal,” said a spokesperson from Interscope, which handles Dre’s label. “They mutually decided to go their separate ways. There are reasons, but I really can’t get into them, just basically creative differences. And [Rakim's] already talking to other people. So that’s really what it is.”

There’s no word on whether the tracks that Dre produced will be available for Rakim to use if he gets a new label deal.
