American Idol runner-up Justin Guarini could head to jail because of a near-boating accident this weekend that almost fatally injured a young girl.

Guarini was driving a personal watercraft with six friends, one of them being Idol winner Kelly Clarkson, in Grand Prairie, Texas on Saturday.

He rode on shore and stopped within a few feet from a 5-year-old girl, according to the girl’s father. A lake patrol spokesman said Guarini didn’t understand local water-safety rules, and was ticketed.

City marshal Clint Heizer said Guarini smiled and drove away laughing, even as the vehicle came close to the girl, according to MTV.

Guarini faces 180 days in jail and a fine of up to $2,000 if convicted of the charge of unsafe boat operation.
