Review: RCA Lyra Personal Jukebox – 20 GB

Posted by Daniel Levine on June 2nd, 2003

The Lyra Personal Jukebox is a portable MP3 player, which features a 20 GB hard drive for storing all your MP3 files and more. You can also put any type of file you want on it for easy access on another computer. Our review will cover the following topics: sound quality, size/portability, ease of use, headphones, hard drive/battery and package contents.

Sound Quality:

The Lyra’s sound quality was decent. We can attribute this partially to the low cost headphones bundled with the unit (see Headphones), and partially to the quality our test MP3′s were encoded at. The unit features the usual Bass/Treble and Balance controls along with a built-in 5 band Equalizer to enhance sound quality.

SizePortability:

The Lyra’s size is one of its major problems. The unit is way to bulky to be used while someone is at the gym or jogging. Moreover, the bundled case and clip are extremely poor. The unit would not stay securely on my belt and the case provided no covering for the players LCD screen.

Ease of Use:

The Lyra’s interface can be confusing while navigating through its complex folder structure. We recommend reviewing the manual thoroughly before attempting to use the unit. The Lyra also requires software to be installed on your PC, which again is not that simple to use. If you’re already using an MP3 player other than MusicMatch’s Jukebox, you’ll have to import all your mp3s and playlists again to MusicMatch’s Jukebox so that they can be downloaded onto your Lyra. Finally, the Lyra uses the slow USB 1.0 interface, meaning it can take up to 30 seconds for the average song to transfer to the unit. Imagine having 1500 songs on your computer ready to transfer to the Lyra. You’ll be waiting for quite some time.

Headphones:

The headphones that ship with the Lyra are a nice addition, but lack the quality that should ship with a unit of this kind. The headphones feel like cheap plastic and are easily breakable. As you can tell, we really didn’t like these and recommend purchasing another set of quality headphones. In addition, we didn’t like the style of headphones that shipped with the unit (around the neck).

Hard Drive/Battery:

It seems the only upside to this player is its hard drive. A whopping 20GB, with the ability to store more than 3000 songs. The units hard drive can also be used as a portable hard drive for storing any other types of data. The Lyra’s battery is a rock solid, Lithium Ion Rechargeable battery, that will last approx. 12 hours on a full charge.

Package Contents:

While we question the quality and usability of the Lyra MP3 player, it does comes fully loaded with Headphones, Lithium Ion Rechargeable Battery (inside device), USB Cable, AC/DC Adapter, Carrying Pouch, Car Kit (must have a tape player in car) and Audio Line-Out Cable. All these extra accesorives give you much more variety and freedom of how and where you want to use your Lyra.

Final Thoughts:

The only advantage this unit may have over its competition is price. It uses the slow USB 1.0 interface to connect to your PC, and tries to cram too many useless features into its Graphical User Interface. Many people will be overwhelmed when using the unit. With Apples iPod now available for PCs, RCAs Lyra just doesn’t stand a chance.
