CD Review: IRS – Welcome to Planet IRS
Toronto, meet one of your own, IRS (The rest of Canada can listen to).
As much as I like Toronto’s infamous circle crew (Kardinall, Choclair, Jully Black, etc.), it’s great to hear something fresh coming from the city. They don’t conform to the sound that people are “supposed to like,” but take a chance and offer a new sound, more DJ oriented, on their major label debut, “Welcome to Planet IRS.” They perform what they want to perform, and it also happens to be what the public will like. “Watch how you step on the IRS, think we’re repping the verse, we’re just reaching repery first,” they rap on “Major League.”
Major props on “No Hesitation” with Planet Asia, a song encouraging competition, not violence. Sure, they swear, they smoke, but they?re just being honest, and they hit the money with this song.
The T-Dot Anthem is a little weak. There’s not much indication that the song is about Toronto, rather than any other city, other than the fact that they keep spelling out T-Dot. It’s a decent song, but no anthem for Toronto.
It’s a great album to listen to while waiting for the Kardi’s new album.
