Rob Coombes from Supergrass recently spoke with andPOP about the UK band’s latest album, “Life on Other Planets.”
What is the one question you hate getting asked?
I hate being asked if it is like the Gallaghers having your brother in the band. I usually say no, it’s nothing like the Gallaghers.
Do you fight like the Gallaghers?
We do, it hasn’t always been that way. We fought like every other like brother and brother.
Why did it take so long for you to get added to Supergrass an official member, after touring with them for so long?
I didn’t do any writing. I suppose I got more involved, I started writing stuff because of the songs I wrote on the last two albums. I shied away from it a little bit for a while. I didn’t particularly want to be famous in anyway. I realized that’s its not that bad; you don’t really become famous unless your band is massive. It doesn’t stop you from living a normal life, and I didn’t want that to happen.
So has that happened to you?
If it were U2, then I wouldn’t have done it, because I don’t really want that kind of fame. Other people could have their lives put in the focus if they want to be famous, but it’s not for me. I felt I can handle this level or notoriety.
What did your bring to the group?
The biggest asset I bring to the group is in songwriting. It’s just things that come when you spend some time on the piano. I don’t really write songs on the guitar like the other guys do. The songs come from just playing shit late at night, when you’ve had a few drinks.
How would you describe your latest album, “Life on Other Planets”?
I think it’s like a live sounding cohesive piece of music. We did it from playing live. I’m quite a perfectionist, I’m never very happy with live shows or stuff I put on record. I always want to do it better. But Tony [Hoffer, the producer] was quite into the idea of getting it on your first couple times, because they’re the ones with the best vibe; he’s totally right. And it’s something which I had to deal with. It’s got the odd mistake here and there. But it hands the energy of the first few takes rather than the technical competence of the 19th take where it’s lost its tackle.
Why did you name the album “Life on Other Planets”?
We were influenced by space when we were writing the album. We have this telescope and we were looking at different planets. It’s just one of many interests. It’s not like we’re obsessed with space.
At what point would you consider this album to be a success
Your bottom line aim when you make a record is being able to make another one and as long as we do that, I’m happy. We obviously have the choice of doing another record and we’re going to make another record. There are different degrees of success, like success in America, success in Canada, or awards; things you can put varying importance on. The most important thing is that you can listen back to it, that it’s a good piece of music.
What’s your craziest tour experience?
I was robbed in Barcelona a few months ago. That was a scary experience. They stole the money out of my pocket. I don’t carry a wallet. I just carry the cash, whatever I need on me. They just took the money. One of them held me and the other one went through my pockets. There wasn’t really anything I could do.
So would your compare that stealing to stealing your music on the internet?
When I was a kid, I used to record tapes off the radio and I used to make my own compilations of songs that I wanted. Really, that’s all the internet people are doing. Maybe I don’t really understand the fullness about the situation. To me, if more people hear out records, even if some people don’t pay for it, it would mean that some people who hear it would buy the records, so it’s not like we’re losing anything from it. More of a pain in the ass is people who burn off 100 CDs and sell them on the street corner for a pound.
Has anyone ever asked you to sign a burned copy?
I don’t think so, no. I would probably do it though. I wouldn’t stand there and get all moral about it. I did the same thing when I was a kid. It really doesn’t bother me.
