In what might change the future of the music industry, the LA Times is reporting that Apple Computer may be in talks with Vivendi Universal to purchase Universal Music Group, for a reported $6 billion.

Universal represents such artists as 50 cent, Shania Twain and U2.

“People close to Jobs say he is convinced that the music industry is about to turn a corner in the copyright war. With the government shutting down pirate Web sites and the record industry now going after individuals for alleged piracy, the Apple chief believes digital theft will become increasingly more complicated, prompting fans to migrate to legitimate services,” sources said

While many might think this deal is just one big rumour, it would all make sense for Apple. Apples widely successful iPod (MP3 player) is the number 1 selling MP3 player today. Furthermore, Apple has been quietly working on a new music service that would allow iPod users to purchase songs over the internet and download them directly to their iPod. Something the music industry has been unsuccessful at in the past.

Update: Apple shares have fallen more than 9% Friday on reports that a purchase of Universal music would wipe out all of its cash remains. As well, Billionaire Marvin Davis said that if Apple purchases Universal Music, he would drop his bid to acquire certain assets.

Update: Apple has released a statement saying they have never made a bid for Universal Music.
