At a non-televised gala dinner Saturday night, Avril Lavigne picked up two Juno Awards, leaving the possibility for a six-win sweep. The televised event, where she is nominated for four more awards, is Sunday night.

Lavigne beat Shawn Desman, K-OS, Sarah Slean, and Sam Roberts in the Best New Artist category. She also picked up Pop Album of the Year.

Earlier in the day, Lavigne was given a plaque by Prime Minister Jean Chretien, signifying 1 million albums sold in Canada (diamond status).

Other winners Saturday night included Swollen Members (Rap Recording), Our Lady Peace (Rock Album), Shania Twain (Country Recording), Sum 41 (Group of the Year), and Diana Krall (Vocal Jazz Album).
