You may not have heard of Mandy Ventrice yet, but you probably will soon. Born in Los Angeles, now living in Boston, the pop singer/songwriter recently signed a management deal with Michael Caputo and Mike Cronin and hopes to get signed to a label soon.
She also hopes to have her album released by the end of 2003 or early 2004.
1.How much have you recorded for your debut album so far?
I have about…over 20 songs recorded that I wrote. But since I recently decided to go into a new musical direction, a lot of those songs won’t be used. So, I’m going to be very busy in the next couple of months, putting together, and writing some new material for the album.
2. Can you describe the sound of it?
I’m going to try to mix rock, hip-hop and R&B, and see what comes out. I’m into so many different musical genres right now, that I want to try to fuse that all together. I love punk, rock, R&B, and hip-hop…so I want to show that through my music.
3. How much major label interest have you had? What is the latest and when do you expect to sign a deal?
My management hasn’t even shopped my package yet, and already two major labels have come to the table. It’s kinda crazy…but recently, I was offered a deal; we’re getting paperwork this week to sign. So, hopefully, within the next two weeks, it’ll be a done deal.
4. Tell me about what it was like touring with O-Town.
I didn’t tour with O-Town, I just made appearances at some of their shows…to meet fans, and help launch me as a solo singer, since I was just coming out of a group. But it was fun, I had already met O-Town
before, but it was cool to see them in their environment on tour.
5. Can you tell me the whole process of getting the deal with Michael Caputo and Mike Cronin?
I’ve known and worked with Mike Caputo for 3 years, we’re best friends…he’s family. I signed with him back in 2000. Basically, him and Mike Cronin decided to partner up, since they’ve been waiting to work with each other for years.
6. How important is writing your own music?
Writing my own songs is extremely significant to me. I just don’t like singing songs that I didn’t write…it feels like I’m doing karaoke. I’m no more a singer than I am a writer. I like to sing what I feel…and when I sing, I like to say what’s on my mind, not what
was on someone else’s.
7. At what point would you consider your singing career a success?
Any step forward, is success to me. I’m growing, I’m improving, and that is success to me. For me, it’s not all about how much money I’m raking in, or about how many people are going to buy my album…it’s
self-improvement, having the opportunity to do what I love to do and what makes me happy.
8. Talk about Poetry in Motion (how you joined it, when, why it?s no longer a group, when you left)?
Mike Caputo asked me to join his girl group in 2000…and I was very reluctant, because I didn’t want to end up being some corny, bubble-gum, pop group, that didn’t even write their own songs. But, I did it,
because I looked at it as an opportunity to get my foot in the door, to meet people, to get the experience. The group split in early 2002, because of conflict in the group, and also because…I had grown
so much as a writer, and was really eager to be on my own, since I was never happy in the group.
9. If you could be a bar of soap, whose shower would you be in? Why?
Justin Timberlake’s…well-because he’s freakin’ hot.
10. Do you have any upcoming shows lined up?
Not yet, I’m really focusing on writing and recording, and I’m learning the guitar, then after that, piano. Although, I’m really anxious to perform.
