Wyclef Jean joins a growing list of black artists who refuse to play in Cincinnati. Jean is respecting an economic boycott called for by a group seeking social and police department reforms, MTV reports.

The concert was scheduled for tonight, as Jean follows in the steps of Bill Cosby, Whoopie Goldberg, Smokey Robinson, and several other high-profile acts that have avoided the city.

“Because I believe there are ongoing civil rights violations in Cincinnati, I have chosen to support the current boycott and not perform on May 2,” he said in a statement. “I hope my fans will understand my decision and join me in the support of human rights everywhere.”

Concert organizers reportedly tried to get Juvenile to replace Jean, but couldn’t work out a deal in time. Juvenile played a show in Cincinnati in March, which saw a controversial appearance by OJ Simpson.
