TLC Sued by Songwriters
Almost-defunct R&B trio TLC have been sued by Corey Glover and Michael Cirincione for copyright-infringement of their 1999 hit “Unpretty.” Glover, former lead singer of Living Colour, says that portions of the lyrics were lifted from a song they had written for the group the previous year, Billboard reports.
The suit was filed in the U.S. District Court in the Southern District of New York on February 1, and also names Dallas Austin, LaFace, Arista, BMG Music, and EMI Music Publishing, as defendants.
The writers’ lawyers say the pair wrote a song called “Make Up Your Mind” but LaFace told them it would not be used. “Glover and Cirincione are seeking compensation of all profits derived from the sale of ‘Unpretty,’ statutory damages, and legal costs,” Billboard says.
