Sugar Jones Goes Old-School

Posted by andPOP Staff on January 23rd, 2003

Many skeptics believed that there was no chance that the Popstars would even cut a single. Boy, were they ever wrong. Sugar Jones was in Toronto last night for their concert at Massey Hall. Consisting of Sahara MacDonald, Andrea Henry, Mirella Dell?Aquila, Julie Crochetiere, and Maiko Watson, the 5 young women are all from different parts of Canada. The group performed 14 songs, mostly from their debut album, including their first single, ?Days Like That,? and their newest hit, ?How Much Longer.?

Sugar Jones took the stage at 8:15 p.m. dressed in matching black low cut pants and short black tops. There were no costume changes throughout the one hour and 15 minute concert. That didn?t seem to bother the hundreds of tweens (and their parents). When the group was about to sing ?A Little Bit Of Heaven,? they made a brief speech about the tragedy on September 11 and dedicated the song to the people of New York, Washington and anyone who was touched by this horrific event. Much of the crowd reacted with a strong applause, which may or may not have been totally appropriate for the situation. That?s what you get for bringing an international issue to a crowd of 10 year olds.

The most exciting part of the show was when each member of the group announced that they were going to choose a song which inspired them growing up. These songs were mainly genres like Doo-Wop, Motown and Jazz. Andrea began the tribute with her rendition of Marvin Gaye?s ?Heard it Through the Grape Vine.? Julie was next, singing Peggy Lee?s blues classic, ?You Give Me Fever.? Sahara followed with the soulful Al Greens? ?Let?s Stay Together.? Maiko performed VH1 Diva?s Live Honoree Aretha Franklin?s ?Natural Woman.? Mirella belted out The Supremes? ?Stop! In the Name of Love.? All five performances highlighted the night for the ?older? audience, but the younger audience didn?t seem to recognize all the tunes, which perhaps calmed them down for a few minutes and put their chairs to use.

Before performing their last song, ?Baby Boo,? the girls mentioned that they would be signing autographs after the show. When they finished the track, the girls hollered ?Thank you Toronto. Goodnight!? About 30 percent of the young fans immediately bolted out the doors to get in line for autographs. These fans did not realize that Sugar Jones would come out half a minute later to sing their career-starting hit ?Days Like That.? Because of this incident, many fans missed the groups? finale. Hopefully those unfortunate fans got the autographs they wanted so badly.

Opening up for Sugar Jones was a young woman by the name of Maren Ord. The crowd paid little attention to the very musically gifted performer, but she was only focused on both her music and those who did pay attention to her. The audience finally started listening when she called four ecstatic girls on stage to play as backup dancers when Ord performed a cover of Britney Spears? ?Hit Me Baby One More Time? with guitar in hand. The cover exceeded the talents of the original (vocally). When Ord was done, she got a very respectable applause for a job well done.

Set List:
1) ?Get Yourself Together?
2) ?How Much Longer??
3) ?I?ve Got You?
4) ?If You?
5) ?Keep On Walking?
6) ?Never Leave Hurt Alone?
7) ?A Little Bit Of Heaven? 8) ?Heard It Through The Grape Vine?
9) ?You Give Me Fever?
10) ?Let?s Stay Together?
11) ?Natural Woman?
12) ?Stop In The Name Of Love?
13) ?Baby Boo?
14) ?Days Like That?
