Sugar Jones Eager to Prove Themselves

Posted by Adam Gonshor on January 23rd, 2003

They hadn?t even held their own concert yet before people began to write off Sugar Jones as just another phase. The ?Original Canadian Popstars,? as they might one day be known are finally hitting the road, travelling across Canada on their very own headlining concert tour. This will be the ultimate test for the girls who beat out thousands to get to where they are today. To be able to perform in front of people is the hardest challenge they have yet to, and possibly will ever face.

?We?re just another up and coming band,? says Mirella, speaking to andPOP backstage at this summer?s Wham Bam concert in Toronto. ?We love music just like everybody else. We hope to be compared to a lot of different acts, not just pop stars.?

It?s been just over a year since Mirella, Julie, Sahara, Maiko, and Andrea tried out for Popstars, with the tryouts being held at large Canadian cities. When they were chosen to form ?Sugar Jones,? they had no idea what to expect.

?It?s a very tricky business. It involves a lot more than the actual music you?re making,? says Julie. ?It?s kind of an adjustment for people like us [who had no previous music experience.] It?s not that you get the chance to work into it and kind of grow gradually. For us we got thrown right in it.?

?We?ve had a lot of supporting people to back us up,? adds Mirella. ?They understand that we?re new at this. We take it day by day.?

The girl group has spent hours with top vocal coaches and believes their sound has matured the way they had hoped.

?Our sound has come together,? Mirella explains. ?At the beginning we were just five girls who came from very different backgrounds trying to make one sound.?

?We got to it,? exclaims Julie.

?We get more chances to perform now. We?re learning to work with each other,? says Andrea. ?We?re learning every day about the business and just interacting with different people. We?re all very strong singers by ourselves. When we come together it?s like ?woa?. We?re all independent, strong women. We each have our own style to our music. It?s interesting when you mix it all together.

Ask Sugar Jones what they enjoy most about the music business, and one common answer comes up. ?Fans,? they all say at once.

Any advice for the people who wish to become future Popstars?

?Plenty!? Julie asserts. ?You?ve got to be ready to work. Don?t give up, whatever you do.? As far as the future for Sugar Jones, she believes ?fans will tell us. We?re just going day by day, we?re just doing the best we can everyday.?
