What could been one of the best parties of the year turned out to be nothing but a disappointment for those in attendance at R. Kelly?s Toronto concert last night at the Air Canada Center. Kelly showed up over an hour late to the concert, and instead of delivering his 2 hour set, he shortened it to just one hour.
Comedian T.K. Kirkland opened the show with a humorous routine, geared at a mature audience. Opening act Syleena Johnson, who was handpicked by Kelly to perform on his ?TP-2? tour, performed for about 20 minutes, but received nothing more than a round of applause from the audience. Then Kirkland came back out to do more comedic material after telling the audience that Kelly was help up at the border and is on his way.
He finally graced the stage at 10:00 by pulling a microphone out of his pants, which had the ladies screaming. He opened with recent hit Fiesta, while loads of blue and silver confetti dropped from the ceiling onto the audience, matching his white leather pants and baby blue jacket. Accompanied by a live band, three backup singers, six dancers, and two rappers beside him, Kelly then performed Home Alone, I Mean (I Don?t Mean It), and Did You Ever Think. During the latter of the three songs, the lights went out, supposedly an electrical malfunction, but obviously planned. Kelly insisted the show must go on and sang an acapella version of R&B Thug, before taking a break as a recorded DJ mixed some songs on the big screen hanging on the backdrop of the stage.
Kelly returned to the stage to sing Slow Dance, from his 1992 debut album Born Into the 90?s, followed by It Seems Like You?re Ready, and Your Body?s Callin?, from his second album released a year later, 12-Play. During the show, but particularly these three slower songs, Kelly teased the audience by grabbing his crotch, pretending to unzip his fly, and pelvic thrusting.
Following a pre-recorded interview, Kelly sang Bump & Grind, a ?free style? song, Feelin? On Yo Booty, F*****? You Tonight and Half On A Baby. A photo of his mother was blasted on screen and he quickly jumped into last year?s hit, I Wish. ?Thank you Toronto,? he said as he left the stage.
Where was the encore? Where was his most popular song he has ever recorded, I Believe I Can Fly? Where was the Stevie Wonder melody that he has performed on every other date of his tour? Where were the eight other songs he had scheduled to sing? Where were the concert winners that were supposed to go on stage with the singer? Where was the second hour of the show?
R. Kelly left to a bitter dismay. As the house lights came on, the audience was stunned. They expected more and deserved much more. They were in disbelief, staying seated for several minutes after he left the stage. It wasn?t until the stage crew began to take apart the set that fans realized they had been ripped off and the concert was over. It should be noted that his performance was majestic, unparalleled to what people could have envisioned, but he disappointed the small (less than 4000) but loyal audience who each paid upwards of sixty dollars.
