Originality is key if you want to make it in the music business. Originality describes Project Wyze, a Canadian rap-rock group who recently released their debut album, ?Misfits.Strangers.Liars.Friends.?
How original are they? They don?t even listen to other groups that sing in their same musical genre.
?Musically speaking, we?ve been doing this for a long time before we?ve even heard of Limp Bizkit and Lincoln Park,? says Bobby, speaking to andPOP from Toronto. ?Our sound is our sound. We don?t necessarily listen to a lot of stuff in the rap-rock genre, so I would think we come off a little bit more original in that sense. From a lyrical aspect, we?re original. We come from a hip-hop background.?
They sound like Marilyn Manson meets Eminem, but not to the extreme of either genre. They take the positives from both the hip-hop and rock scenes and mesh them together to create the rudimental sound.
?There?s a lot of parallels,? compares Bobby. ?I think it?s just from a creating aspect of writing the music, I think the way we chose to go, we feel a lot better about it. We switched [from rap to rap-rock] probably around 93-94. We got invited to play with a punk band, and at the top, we weren?t really happy with the way the whole hip-hop scene was going. When we played that show, it was like a different energy. It was crazy.? Crazy, but it stuck. ?Creating that way with the band was a lot better and we thought we can do a lot more with it.?
Bobby and his best friend Yaz are the two MCs in Project Wyze, with Elie playing the bass, Brad Dean on the drums, and Adam and Sasha on guitars.
?Me and Yaz write our own lyrics,? explains Bobby. ?I think coming from an underground hip-hop background, we use a lot more word play and creative writing.? They?ve been best friends since they were 13 years old, and have been playing together for 13 years. ?We?re not only writing partners or bandmates, we?re best of friends ever since back then. We went to school together. It continues to be the same to this day.?
?Misfits.Strangers.Liars.Friends? describes the subjects that Project Wyze sing about, according to Bobby. ?The name actually came from lyrics in the song, ?Strangers Among Us.? Those four words, I think incorporated everything on the album that we talked about, and I think that?s why we chose to name the album that.”
The first single released to radio off the album is ?Nothing?s What It Seems.? At no time was the group fearful about releasing a rap-rock song, even though it is not a typical genre that people are used to.
?What that song is, is us,? Bobby attests. ?We were just hoping that people would open up to it, and if they did, that leaves you a lot more avenue to go that way.?
What?s next for the boys? They are currently writing songs for their next album and are in the midst of planning a tour.
We?re just in the process of writing stuff right now. We?re just going to be doing the same thing and hopefully get better.
