There were many highlights, but as always at the MTV Video Music Awards, there were lowlights. The MTV VMAs 2001 presented awards to the best videos Thursday night in New York City. The most memorable moment was when Michael Jackson came out unannounced during ?N Sync?s performance of Pop. The King of Pop danced with the group at the end of their song.
?N Sync was the big winner of the night, stealing four awards including the Viewer?s Choice honors. The group?s performance was justifiably overshadowed by Jackson, who will perform at his own concert along with The Jackson 5 and ?N Sync on Friday.
The Best Video of the Year was awarded to Mya, Pink, Christina Aguilera, and Lil? Kim for Lady Marmalade. The video also won for best video from a film.
Britney Spears took the stage as she debuted her next single, Slave For You. After arriving in a cage with a white tiger, and having a snake wrapped around her neck, it became obvious that Spears was lip-syncing. The performance was definitely a lowlight because of that. Jennifer Lopez and Ja Rule performed the remix of J-Lo?s I?m Real, and while they were both off-key for parts of the song, it was done very well.
One of the most anticipated performances was that of Alicia Keys, who sang her debut hit- Fallin?. Keys played classical music on the piano before breaking into a rendition of the song accompanied by a gospel choir. She later won the award for Best New Artist.
Gwen Stefani was the lucky charm for Eve and Moby, who won for Best Female and Male Artist, respectively. Stefani appeared in both of their videos, and was later thanked by the two artists while the three presented an award.
Fat Boy Slim was nominated for nine awards, and won the night?s high of six ?Moon Men,? but failed to win in any big categories.
Mudvayne beat out such artists as Alicia Keys and Craig David to capture the MTV2 award, showcasing new talent. The group of four men arrived in white suits, tainted with blood from a fake bullet wound.
The Backstreet Boys made their first television appearance since AJ McLean returned two weeks ago after undergoing treatment for alcoholism, handing the Best Hip-Hop Award to Outkast to start out the show. McLean told the crowd, ?today is 64 days sober and I?m proud of it.?
Host Jamie Foxx then walked on stage with a bottle of champagne, teasing the recovering Backstreet Boy. Foxx also teased Mariah Carey, who today reentered a clinic for her breakdown. Despite offending a few people, Foxx proved to be one of the best hosts MTV has ever had. He began the show performing several recent hits in opera-like format.
A teary-eyed Janet Jackson began a tribute to Aaliyah, killed in a plane crash on August 25. Missy Elliott, who wore a jacket with the singer?s picture on the back, joined Timbaland and Ginuwine to share their memories.
?Your music will always move on through me,? said Timbaland, one of Aaliyah?s Producers.
?I love you Aaliyah, and you’re forever missed,? said Elliott.
Aaliyah?s brother, Rashad Haughton, then graced the stage. ?We love you,? he said, before looking up to the sky and saying, ?I love you.?
When U2 was handed the Video Vanguard award for lifetime achievement, Bono gave it to the Ramones, who lost one member, Joey Ramone, this year to lymphoma. The band performed Elevation, but not before technical problems forced to MTV to break into a commercial. The problem was fixed and the show went on as planned, with U2 apologizing for the delay.
