Kiss 92 Presents First Annual Fannies

Posted by Adam Gonshor on January 23rd, 2003

?N Sync and Destiny?s Child lead the pack of winners at the first annual Kiss 92 Fan?s Choice Awards Friday at the Air Canada Center in Toronto. The winners of the ?Fannies,? all voted on by fans, were given out in front of over 5000 people.

Aaron Carter, who had been in Toronto for a few days filming his latest music video, hosted the show put on by the hit music station. He didn?t sing a song about the nominees like Billy Crystal would do at the Oscars, but Carter had the girls screaming, especially when he threw his tie into the crowd towards the end of the show.

The most memorable moment of the night was when actress Jennifer Love Hewitt presented the International Achievement Award to her close friend, Enrique Iglesias. Hewitt played Iglesias? love interest in his most recent hit, ?Hero.? ?This is voted by the fans, so thank you so much,? he said after hugging Hewitt as he accepted the award.

?I was so surprised,? said Kelly Rowland from Destiny?s Child, the only member of the trio who made the trip to Toronto. Destiny?s Child received two awards, Favourite Female Group and Favourite CD for ?Survivor.? ?The girls called me before I got out there. They wanted to be here so bad because we came here a couple of months ago and they told us about the Fannies, and we can possibly win, and now that we really did, I can?t wait to tell them. I?m really excited to be here.?

?N Sync won for Favorite Male Group and Favourite Video for ?Pop.? O-Town took home the award for Favourite Song for their smash hit, ?All or Nothing.? The group sent in a pre-recorded acceptance speech.

Favourite Male was awarded to hip-hop star Nelly, and Favourite Female went to Jennifer Lopez. Craig David, who had a pre-recorded acoustic performance played for the crowd, is Favourite New Male Artist. Alicia Keys was voted Favourite New Female Artist.

Ricky J, dressed in a black suit and ruby-red shirt, won Favourite Canadian Male, prompting Aaron Carter to run out and hug him on stage as he accepted the award.

Performing live were Train, Baby Blue Sound Crew, David Usher, Wave, Willa Ford, and Amanda Marshall.

Scotty 2 Hottie, a World Wrestling Federation star, presented an award, and told andPOP he felt awkward being there. ?The WWF booked me here. I didn?t decide. They sent me up here. I?ve been here all day promoting Wrestlemania 18.”

It may have been just another awards show, in the very cluttered award show circuit, but what made the Fannies significant is, it gave Canadian Top-40 Music a chance to let its stars shine bright. Unlike the Junos, where pop artists might present an award but rarely win, the Fannies gave opportunities for these artists to take part in the festivities by being nominated, as well as presenting or performing. Also, the fans, not music industry-types, voted on the awards, and it was obvious that the awards were even more special to the artists because of that fact.

Complete List of Winners:

Favourite Male: Nelly
Favourite Female: Jennifer Lopez
Favourite Male Group: ?N Sync
Favourite Female Group: Destiny’s Child
Favourite New Male: Craig David
Favourite New Female: Alicia Keys
