Flair, Raptors Launch Wrestlemania Fan Event

Posted by Adam Gonshor on January 23rd, 2003

Toronto will not only host nearly 70,000 fans for Wrestlemania in March, but also an additional 40,000 people will be able to be a part of the event. Fan Axxess, a three day fan festival, will take place at the National Trade Centre at Exhibition Place starting on March 14.

?I?m thrilled to be here today. Toronto is a great sports city. I have been coming here since 1978,? said Ric Flair, 2-time WWF Champion and 14-time WCW champion, at a press conference in Toronto to launch the event. ?The WWF really prides itself on its relationship with its fans and I am here today to help kick off Fan Axxess. That means we as wrestlers and we as a company are going to open the doors behind the scenes to the fans who want to be part of the pre-Wrestlemania ceremonies.?

Joining Flair at Fan Axxess will be tons of WWF Superstars, from The Rock, to Stone Cold Steve Austin. The festival is designed to give fans a taste of what it is like behind the scenes, and to give them an opportunity to interact with their favourite wrestlers.

Will the nWo show up? ?You never know!? says Carl DeMarco, President of WWF Canada. ?Not if Ric Flair has his way.?

Animated Toronto Raptor Jerome ?Junk Yard Dog? Williams will be the commissioner of Fan Axxess, as appointed by Flair, ?half-owner? of the WWF. Williams enlisted teammate Tracy ?Long Range Bomber? Murray to be a guest-manager of a wrestler on the first day.

?I don?t know who it is,? Murray told andPOP, regarding whom he will be managing. ?But whoever it is, I?m guarantying victory.?

Some attractions at Fan Axxess include: live wrestling demonstrations, question and answer periods, video games, WWF vehicles on display, fantasy play-by-play, autograph sessions, shopzone, Hall of Fame, and much more. There?s even a ?Superstar Impressions? attraction where people can see replicas of WWF Superstar body parts.

Fan Axxess dates back to Wrestlemania IV in Atlantic City, New Jersey as a low-key private event for Wrestlemania ticket-holders. In 1994, and 1995, the event was open to the general public but was suspended until 2000 in Anaheim, California, when the event really took off. Actual WWF Staff will run Axxess, unlike similar festivals which are run by volunteers, such as NHL?s All Star Fan Fest which hit Toronto two years ago.

For those people who do not hold a Wrestlemania ticket for the March 17 event, a limited amount of seats will go one sale a week before, once all the floor plans are finalized. Some seats have been saved for prime camera locations.

The interview is in video format and requires that you have RealPlayer 8.0 or G2 installed. If you do not have it please visit Real.com.
