As the U.S TV station MTV celebrates its 20th anniversary, Canada officially launched our Cancon version on October 18th. MTV Canada is currently available for free to Digital Cable Subscribers until December 1, and then it will be ‘pay to play’ from December 2 onwards.
It may be easy to dismiss MTV Canada by telling yourself that you already have MuchMusic…so who needs an Americanized version of the same thing? But MTV Canada operates in a slightly different way. While there are a multitude of VJ’s on MUCH MUSIC who introduce the videos throughout most of the day, MTV Canada relies on two local VJ’s who co-host a five days a week, 90-minute, audience-driven show called SELECT. It is a top ten video countdown hosted by Brad Leggatt, where the viewers from across Canada vote via phone or through the shows official website. There is a live audience on this Vancouver-based set and a multitude of actors and musical artists drop by to discuss their latest projects. And from various locations in Toronto, co-host Exan Auyoung brings you interviews with some of today’s hottest musical acts.
But while the MuchMusic VJ’s host most of their out-of-the-studio shows and specials, the bulk of MTV Canada showcases an onslaught of U.S based MTV programs such as the behind-the-scenes, Making the Video, a reality show called The Real World, the animated Spy Groove as well as Cribs, where the artists let the cameras take a tour of their homes. If you are looking for a succession of music videos, then you wont find it on MTV Canada. During their daily programming there is a maximum of three hours of video music play.
But the choice is yours…or you don’t have to choose at all. You can set your VCR to tape one of the various MTV shows or you can go into video overflow on MuchMusic. But just don’t assume that MTV Canada is simply a replica of the 17-year-old Much. You may just be turned on and want to tune into the newest kid on the block.
