Carey Seeking New Label
Mariah Carey is down, but not out. Carey was ousted by her label, Virgin Records, earlier in the week which has caused the diva to seek a new contract elsewhere.
Reports at first indicated she was speaking with Arista (BMG), but Whitney Houston, who is signed to the label, allegedly called up boss L.A. Reid and yelled at him. She wants to be the biggest name at the company, and that title would be threatened if Mariah signs on board.
Now, it appears like she is considering Def Jam (Universal), or rather, they are considering her.
Her choices are minimal. She left Columbia Records (Sony) last year because of a feud with ex-husband and boss Tommy Mottola. She’s gone from Virgin, owned by EMI. The only big labels left are Universal, which she is speaking with, Warner, which has Madonna, and BMG, which Houston made clear is not an option.
