Layne Staley, the lead singer and guitarist for Alice in Chains, was found dead in his Seattle apartment, authorities said, according to the AP. Staley was 34.

The body was found on Friday, but it was decomposing, meaning he was dead for several days. Tests had to be done, and the body was identified as Staley’s on Saturday.

Alice in Chains, a Seattle grunge group most famous in the early 90s, often sang about heroin, and Staley often spoke about his drug use in interviews.

“I wrote about drugs, and I didn’t think I was being unsafe or careless by writing about them. Here’s how my thinking pattern went: When I tried drugs, they were (expletive) great, and they worked for me for years, and now they’re turning against me — and now I’m walking through hell, and this sucks,” he told Rolling Stone in 1996.
