andPOP’s Top 10 Most Memorable Interviews of 2002
1. Andrew WK- Best interview of all time and it will be tough to beat it. This party rocker is hilarious, whether he was telling jokes, funny stories, or going into some sort of catatonic state, all during the interview. We danced, he showed us his moves, we taught him one of ours, and we all went home better people.
2. Craig David- He had just released his sophomore album and we were lucky to chat about it with this star.
3. Glenn Lewis- After courting him on two previous occasions, we ran into him at Vince Carter?s All Star game this summer while we were both eating dinner in the media room. We were finally able to take 15 minutes of his time to do an interview. He was very apologetic about the two other times we didn?t hook up. What more can you ask for? Class act.
4. Brothers Creeggan- Brothers Jim, from the Barenaked Ladies, and Andy, former Barenaked Lady, invited us into their home (and then quickly out to their backyard) where we conversed about their new album. Very nice guys. How often does a Barenaked Lady invite you over to his house? Well twice for andPOP this year. We spoke to Kevin Hearn earlier in the year at his house, and just like the Creeggans, he?s a very nice guy. We also spoke with Steven Page and Ed Robertson of the band this year at the Juno Awards Press Conference. Maybe we?ll speak with Tyler Stewart next year to make it 5 for 5.
5. (tie) All the NBA players we spoke to at Vince Carter?s All Star game- We interviewed almost every player at the game, including Jerry Stackhouse, Elton Brand, and Antawn Jamison. It was a change for us, as we?re used to talking to musicians about music, not athletes about music. Ah? good times.
6. David Chocahi- We spoke to the former Baywatch star after a photo shoot at someone?s elegant pool outside their mansion. Without going into too much detail, there was some confusion over one of our questions, and took a couple days to clear everything up. Chokachi is a class act.
7. K-OS- He had a lot to say one summer day, including that he?s not planning a second album because he could be dead. ?What if I get hit by a bus?? True. The interview took place on a bench outside a restaurant that Bow Wow was at, so there were a few very excited fans watching the interview. They were fans of Bow Wow however, but still approached K-OS simply because he was ?somebody,? even during our interview! Interesting setting for sure, but the most interesting setting for an interview this year was when we spoke with Theory of a Deadman. We were also sitting on a bench in a park, but this time there were dozens of homeless people wandering around. It could have made for an interesting watch had the homeless people done something, anything, but we scared them off somehow.
8. Kardinal Offishall – We spoke with Kardi at the Urban Music Awards and at Vince Carter?s All Star Game Press Conference and he always has something interesting to say. He?s a very approachable guy, even though he towers over us. Someone we also spoke to that day was a man who we towered over- Toronto Mayor Mel Lastman. When asking him if there was anything he could beat Vince at, he replied no. Not even cards? ?I don?t play cards,? he was quick to tell us.
9. Nickelback- Right after they won a few awards at the Much Music Video Awards, they came back to the press room. But there was nobody in the press room except us, probably because the show had ended and there was an open bar. So we had brief interview with Chad and the boys before they headed off, presumably to get drunk.
10. Haydain Neale of Jacksoul- Haydain spoke to us at the Funk and Soul Revival in May. Our camera man was sick, so Julie from Sugar Jones filled in to do some interesting work behind the camera.
