Time Magazine named “three ordinary people that did extraordinary things” as the publication’s “Person of the Year” for 2002.

This ended speculation that rapper and actor Eminem would be chosen.

Sherron Watkins, a vice president at Enron, Cynthia Cooper of WorldCom, and Coleen Rowley, an agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, were the three chosen.

“It came down to did we want to recognize a phenomenon that helped correct some of the problems we’ve had over the last year,” said Time managing editor Jim Kelly, according to the Associated Press.

Although he wasn’t considered a finalist for the recognition by the magazine, Eminem lead online polls, and some fans thought he had a shot.

Others considered included U.S. President George W. Bush, al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, and New York attorney general Eliot Spitzer.
