Jurassic 5 arrived on the scene in the late 1990s captivating hip hop fans with their original, trigger-happy rhymes. They released the EP entitled Jurassic 5 EP in 1997, followed by the critically acclaimed Quality Control in 2000. Jurassic 5 consists of lead rappers Chali 2na (Charlie Tuna), Akil, Zaakir (Soup), and Marc 7, and DJs Cut Chemist and Nu-Mark. J5 hit the mainstream Top 40 in 2000 with their hit singles, ?Quality Control,? ?Monkey Bars? and ?Great Expectations.?
Their latest release, “Power in Numbers,” displays impressive maturity in through its production, lyrics and beats. It features legendary rapper Big Daddy Kane, Percy P, Kool Keith, Juju of the Beatnuts, and the pride of Canada, Nelly Furtado.
Power in Numbers touches such varieties of music as hip hop, R&B, soul, and the coincidentally modern Old School. Die-hard fans will find the Power is much darker and informative than that of “Quality Control.” This is displayed in the DJ Nu-Mark produced ?Freedom.? ?If You Only Knew,? produced by Juju, has a very Columbian-jazz like feel to it. Juju also lends his talents to the bouncy ?One of Them.? “Power in Numbers” is a very well accomplished project, evident though the classic J5 lyrical harmonizing and the stylistic retro-rap production.
