CD Review: Ms. Jade – Girl Interrupted

Posted by Adam Gonshor on December 19th, 2002

The release of Ms. Jade’s ‘Girl Interrupted’ gives a breath of fresh air to the rap scene and she can rap with the best of them. Ms. Jade?s vocals are stronger than any other woman rapper in recent memory. In each song, she uses her powerful and exciting voice to portray her message.

Timbaland, who signed Jade to his label, produced nine tracks for the album, including the first single, ?Feel the Girl.? The song is an instant club hit, with a unique dance beat, complementing Ms. Jade?s fast rhymes.

?Jade?s a Champ? features a certain Neptunes ambiance, while she self proclaims herself as a true player in the rap industry. Your head will sway back and forth listening to ?She?s a Gangsta.? Her voice is actually convincing enough that it is believable that she might actually be a ?gangsta?.?

?The Come Up? is produced by the Neptunes, but Pharrell William?s background spooky sound, which plays every two seconds, is annoying. As good as the Neptunes have been in the past, they messed up with this song. It?s hard to ignore that ghostly sound of Williams and it puts a big shadow over Jade on this song.

?Ching Ching,? which samples Nelly Furtado?s ?Baby Girl,? has more of Furtado and Timbaland performing than Jade, but the song is one of the best on the album. Jade, in her limited raps, and Furtado, give listeners a one-two punch that they thrive for. ?Ching Ching 2,? which is without Furtado, sees Timbaland rapping almost as much as Jade. It does not even compare to the former.

In another collaboration, Jade holds her own with Jay Z in ?Count it Off.? The constant holler of the song?s title in the background almost ruins the song, but she saves it with her hyper assonances. Those same hollers continue at the beginning of ?Really Don?t Want My Love? with Missy Elliott, ironically illustrating the phrase ?disaster from the start.? Elliott?s staleness offers nothing and the lyrics could have been written by a toddler (well, a pot smoking toddler). The song is uninspiring and gives no justification to both artists? true abilities.

?Big Head? has a certain trance-like feel to it, with the same 4-note bar playing throughout the song, and no real message to the lyrics other than to start dancing. Jade sounds tired and the song will make listeners want to sleep, not party.

Since Puff Daddy had a rock aspect to ?It?s All About the Benjamins,? there has been few rock/hip-hop songs. Jade tries her hands at the art with ?Different,? where she sings ?People look at me wrong/think I?m so different.? While the lyrics are unclear (does she want to be different or not?), Timbaland succeeds at combining the two genres.

Her passion is heard in ?Why U Tell Me That,? lashing back at an ex-lover who left her. ?If you here when I come back/I?m still on your ass/I?m mad as s***/I?ll probably wind up killing your ass.? She talks about hiding drugs for this guy, miscarrying his baby, and then unexpectedly thanks guys like him for making women understand ?how strong we are as women;? quite the twist to the mostly lyrically dependant song.

?Keep Ur Head Up,? a male-bashing song, doesn?t follow the same formula as other gender hatred songs of the past. She encourages women to look for better men, and more importantly, to have protected sex, as she deals with the issue of aids. Nesh sings the chorus with the same passion Ms. Jade has in her raps.

Timbaland certainly wants it known that he?s the man behind Ms. Jade. His multiple raps on the album would imply Jade couldn?t make it by herself, but that is by no means the case. Timbaland?s offerings are great, but Jade could have done just as well without his vocals.
