A lot has happened in the life of Dave Grohl, the lead singer of the Foo Fighters, since the group?s last album. Whether it was legal battles surrounding Nirvana or recording with a new band, Grohl and the Foo Fighters prove with ?One by One? that despite any distractions, they can always return to their rock roots.

Unlike other rock albums on the market, these songs do not blend together. It is obvious by listening that much preparation went into making sure each song was unique.

In some songs, Grohl sings a verse quietly, then shouts, such as in ?Disenchanted Lullaby? and ?All My Life.? ?Low? was clearly influenced by Grohl?s other project, ?Queens of the Stone Age,? featuring very whispery vocals and loud instruments.

?Have it All? took a step away from that formula. It featured Grohl not whispering or shouting, but instead singing with a higher passion, as well as an entertaining guitar solo at the end.

?Times Likes These? sees Grohl takes a step back from his grunge-rock roots to produce something more sentimental that could appeal to both pop and rock audiences. It?s not that he went soft or anything like that, but almost anyone can relate to the lyrics, ?It?s time like these you learn to live again.?

With ?Tired of You,? the group took a stripped down approach with an acoustic feel and somber attitude. ?Lonely as You? crescendos in joy, and is bleeding of anticipation for what the next verse will bring.

?Overdrive? takes listeners on a journey through the mind of Grohl, with perhaps inappropriate lyrics such as, ?There’s a lie, I think you’ll find/It’s locked inside of everyone/You and I get on with life/Pray we’ll find a better one,? and ?Overdrive, I’m going life or death/Keep hanging by a thread.? It is puzzling why he would include such lyrics on one of his albums, even though they are merely metaphors, not actually suicidal, since his Nirvana bandmate Kurt Cobain committed suicide.

The almost 8-minute ?Come Back? is a proper way to end the album, confirming once again that the Foo Fighters still know how to have a good ol? fashioned jam session.
