Earlier this year, Jin impressed the audiences and judges by winning BET’s “106 and Park’s – Freestyle Friday” for seven weeks in a row, landing him a record deal with the Ruff Ryders. But there is one noticeable difference between this MC and his peers- he?s of Asian descent.
?I?m trying to bring something different to the game because I?m different, as opposed to everything that?s coming out and has come out in the past,? Jin tells andPOP, speaking from New York.
Breaking into a business where every other successful rapper has been of a different race has been tough for Jin, but he says he is up for the challenge.
?It has definitely been difficult getting my foot in the door because a lot of times people get worried. They?re kind of wary. It?s show and prove. The fact that you?re different, people tend to prejudge, like, ?oh, I don?t know, a Chinese guy rapping; what?s that about?? Once you do show your talent, people appreciate it times 10?.?
Jin grew up in Miami, Florida, where it was hard to get his music heard because there were few outlets to perform. He moved to New York, where he was given more chances, including his now legendary BET run.
The first time Jin had the chance to show his talent was in Junior High. He recorded a demo tape in his garage using a karaoke machine, and gave it to a friend who worked on the morning announcements in the office. The friend agreed to play it after learning there was no cursing.
?I was the star for the day,? he says. ?That might have been that one point in my life that I was like, ?I could do this, people like it.??
Experiences like that helped Jin learn the basics of rapping, but soon after that, he learned his real niche, freestyle rhyming. When he took his skill to BET, he had nothing on his mind but winning the freestyle battles.
?[My manager and I] set our expectations high, but at the same time, we just took it one battle at a time. In our minds, we were like, if we get through the first week, it?s a done deal. I?m going all the way.?
The reason why he believes the first week was the hardest is because he had to rap first. After he got the first win, he went second in the other six weeks, which meant he ?responded? to the challengers, something he says is much easier, which led him into BET?s “Freestyle Hall of Fame.”
?Once you get into that position where you’re going second and you get the last word, it?s a big difference. The comeback is my strong point anyway.?
In his third week, the Ruff Ryders contacted BET to talk to Jin. After spending some time hanging out with them, Jin signed a record deal.
He is currently working on his first album. He describes his sound as ?more or less heavy east coast sound.? Some topics that will be dealt with on the album include girl problems and growing up from his perspective.
A song called ?China Town? is dedicated to Asians. ?There are a lot of misconceptions about [the Asian community], like people see certain stuff on TV that they?re portraying, and people think that?s the only side of it, when in reality, there is a lot more.?
Another track called ?Dumb Ones? he describes as ?sort of like an anthem for dumb people. Seriously, one of the reason?s we think that song will be big is because there are so many dumb people in the world.?
Don?t expect to see too many collaborations on the album.
?The most important thing for the collaborations is I want it to be something creative as opposed to just doing a song with somebody, just so I could say, ?on this album we have so and so??.?
He has a song he might do with fellow Ruff Ryder Jadakiss, and possibly one with Eve. He also wants to do one with Redman.
Besides preparing his debut album, Jin is acting in ?Fast and the Furious 2.? He plays a young Asian ?urban type character,? one of the main mechanics who fixes people?s cars.
The Casting Director got a hold of his press kit video and thought Jin fit the character well. He did a reading for John Singleton, the Director, in Miami, who quickly offered the roll to Jin.
The album is expected to be released in March or April of 2003, and the movie is scheduled to hit theaters next summer.
