R&B singer D’Angelo was arrested Monday in Richmond, Virginia, after resisting arrest on misdemeanor charges of aggressive driving and other counts, police said, according to the Associated Press.

The singer, whose real name is Michael Eugene Archer, allegedly had a confrontation with a woman at a gas station, and spit on her. Police tried to take him into custody Monday afternoon, and he had to be subdued with pepper spray.

D’Angelo was released on his recognizance pending a Jan. 15 appearance in Chesterfield General Court, reports the AP.

He is also charged with misdemeanors of assault, curse and abuse, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
